BTP Card: Everything You Need to Know About the Professional Identification Card and Your Obligations During a Posting in France
The BTP Card is not just an administrative formality — it is now the primary tool in combating illegal work on construction sites. For a foreign employer posting employees to France, ignoring its rules exposes the company to heavy penalties and operational disruption.
What Is the BTP Card?
The BTP Card, or professional identification card for the construction sector (Bâtiment et Travaux Publics), is an individual, secure card that reliably identifies any employee working on building or public works sites. It strengthens compliance checks by authorised inspectors, contracting authorities, and project owners, while helping to prevent undeclared work and unfair competition.
Why Is the BTP Card Mandatory for Posted Workers?
Following recent reforms and applicable decrees, a simple Prior Declaration of Posting (SIPSI declaration) is no longer sufficient for construction sites. The employer must:
- Obtain (or activate) a BTP Card for each posted employee, or
- Ensure that an existing card is updated with the posting declaration number before the mission begins.
This activation facilitates inspections and allows the CIBTP to link the card to the relevant posting.
Validity of the BTP Card and Temporary Certificate
Operationally, the BTP card issued to posted workers can now be valid for up to five years, but it must only be activated for the posting period. Between assignments, the card can be deactivated.
While waiting for the physical card, a temporary certificate (equivalent to the card) is provided electronically. Its validity is limited and strictly regulated, with a maximum duration set for cessation.
Employer Obligations Checklist for Posting a Construction Worker
- Before posting: Submit the Prior Declaration of Posting via the official SIPSI portal and, if needed, request/activate the BTP Card through the CIBTP platform.
- On-site compliance: Ensure each employee can present their BTP Card or temporary certificate during inspections by State agents, contracting authorities, or project owners.
- Loss or damage: Invalidate the card and order a replacement via the CIBTP portal.
Why Comply with the BTP Card Rules and the Risks of Non-Compliance
Strict compliance with BTP Card regulations allows you to:
- Avoid administrative and criminal sanctions related to undeclared work
- Smooth access to construction sites (contracting authorities often require the card)
- Accelerate inspections and protect your company’s reputation
In practice, compliance is a competitiveness factor on French construction markets.
